Secretariat for the Implementation of Spanish (SIS)

SECRETARIADO PARA LA IMPLEMENTACION DEL ESPAÑOL (SIE)

 

In an attempt to make Trinidad and Tobago more attractive to foreign investment and in another step toward achieving developed country status by the year 2020, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago initiated the Spanish As the First Foreign Language (SAFFL) initiative in September 2004.  The Secretariat for the Implementation of Spanish is the implementation arm of the SAFFL initiative. Objectives of the Spanish As the First Foreign Language initiative include:

 

  1. SAFFL Objective: Facilitate a new learning environment through which the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago will learn and adopt Spanish as the First Foreign Language by the year 2020.

 

  1. SAFFL Objective: Ensure that there is a clear understanding of the cultures that are emerging in our society and their impact on the cultural landscape of T&T.

 

  1. SAFFL Objective: Ensure there is public awareness of and support for the Spanish As the First Foreign Language (SAFFL) initiative.

Current SAFFL projects include:

  • Bilingual street signage in POS

  • Providing assistance in creating Spanish-language learning environments throughout the public sector

  • Compiling information on Spanish-language providers in Trinidad and Tobago

The Spanish As the First Foreign Language initiative was launched to the pubic by the Secretariat for the Implementation of Spanish (SIS) on March 22, 2005. Response to the launch has been largely positive and has included editorial and audiovisual media coverage.
