The THA was officially established in 1980 by Act No. 37 of 1980, assented to on September 23rd, 1980, for the purpose of “making better provision for the administration of the island of Tobago and for matters therewith”.
The THA consists of 12 elected assemblymen and four appointed councillors. Three councillors are appointed on the advice on the Chief Secretary and one on the advice of the Minority Leader. The Chief Secretary is the leader of the majority party in the assembly.
